Check who pays for the funeral
Find out whether the estate, a plan, or a benefit covers the cost.
People often pay from their own pocket when the bank would have released the money.
- How long it takes
- An hour of phone calls
- Typical cost
- Free to check
- What you need before you start
- The funeral invoice or estimate
- A death certificate
Most banks will pay a funeral invoice directly from the deceased's account before probate. Ask — it is standard, and they will want the invoice, not a request for cash.
Check for a pre-paid plan, an over-50s policy, a work death-in-service benefit, or a union or trade benevolent fund.
If you are on certain benefits you may be able to claim a Funeral Expenses Payment. There is also a Children's Funeral Fund in England and Wales.
Whoever signs the funeral director's contract is personally liable for the bill, even if the estate later repays it.
