Get the death formally verified
Call the right person so the death can be verified.
Nothing else can begin until a doctor or paramedic has confirmed the death in writing.
- How long it takes
- Usually within a few hours
- Typical cost
- Free
- What you need before you start
- The address where the person died
- Their full name and date of birth
If the death was expected and happened at home, call the GP surgery in working hours, or 111 out of hours. They will send someone to verify the death.
If it was unexpected, call 999. Do not move anything in the room.
In a hospital, hospice or care home, the staff do this for you and will tell you when to come in or who to speak to next.
You do not have to rush the funeral director. There is no time limit on this call.
