Funeral costs in the UK: what you actually pay for
Written by Simon D Campbell, Director, Shropshire Expert Cleaners LTD · 17 years in bereavement, trauma and hospital-standard cleaning
The short answer
SunLife's Cost of Dying Report 2026 puts the average simple funeral at £3,828, a traditional funeral at £4,510 and a direct cremation at £1,628. Ask for an itemised quote, and ask the bank to pay the invoice directly from the deceased's account.

Funerals are one of the few purchases people make while exhausted, grieving and under time pressure — which is exactly why it helps to see the numbers before the first appointment.
The current averages
SunLife's Cost of Dying Report 2026, the longest-running UK study of funeral prices, puts the average simple attended funeral at £3,828 and a traditional attended funeral at £4,510. A direct cremation — no service, no mourners present — averages £1,628. Once send-off extras such as the wake, flowers and notices are included, total average spend reaches £5,140.
What the funeral director's fee does and does not include
Their fee typically covers care of the person who has died, the coffin, a hearse and the staff on the day. Third-party costs — cremation or burial fees, the doctor's or minister's fees, flowers, notices, catering — are usually listed separately. Ask for the full written price list; UK funeral directors are required to display standardised price information.
Questions that reduce the bill
Can we use our own cars? Can we supply the coffin? Is a weekday morning cremation cheaper? Is there an unattended or direct option? Can we hold the service at the crematorium only, rather than church and crematorium? Each of those routinely saves hundreds of pounds and none of them makes the funeral less meaningful.
Paying
Banks will usually pay a funeral invoice directly from the deceased's account before probate if you present the bill. Check for a prepaid funeral plan, an over-50s policy, a death-in-service benefit from an employer, or a trade union benefit before assuming the family must fund it.
If you receive certain benefits, a Funeral Expenses Payment may help. Take a night to think before signing anything — a reputable funeral director will not push you.
